CHOOSING the interior finishes that express your home’s personality can be a daunting task but also a fun exercise.

When designing or redesigning the inside of your home, every owner wants to be in full control of every detail, from the type of flooring in the dining room to the glaze on the kitchen cabinets. Karen Marsden, owner of Karen Marsden Interiors, says finishes refer to the products that are used in a space once the building, structural work and wet work have been completed. She says these include flooring, light fittings, countertops and cabinets.

Marsden shares tips on how to choose finishes that complement your home’s personality.

Plan and budget

Before starting with your home makeover, there are a few things to take into consideration. She says it is important that you have a clear idea of the look and feel you are going for, as well as if what you want is practical for the space and your budget.

By starting an “idea file”, you are able to get an idea of prices, as well as a look and feel that might catch your eye.

Your file can include anything from colour and fabric swatches to magazine cut-outs of the finishes you like.

Also, if you are trying to be more budget-conscious, Marsden says there are great flooring options like vinyl floors that look incredible and are up to a quarter of the price of wooden floors.

Create a consistent look

When revamping your space, try not to use too many different finishes — keep them consistent. For example, use the same flooring throughout the home.

The moment too many different textures and colours are introduced into a space, the busier it becomes and the more cluttered it looks.

Decorate to
existing art

However, if you are leaning more towards using art as a finish, you should try matching the art to the décor. “Art is so personal and so subjective. It is often collected over a period of time and represents different times of one’s life. You are not going to just change your collection because your décor is being updated. If necessary, the best way to ‘update’ it is to reframe it and use a more contemporary frame.”

So once you have considered the costs, look and feel, let your home “talk to you” and follow its voice to its perfect finish.
