Imbali murder accused granted bail

THAMSANQA Duncan Mahlaba (27), who is accused of killing the mother of his two children Nombuso Madondo (26), was granted R1 000 bail in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Mahlaba was arrested last weekend after he allegedly attacked and stabbed Madondo multiple times at her home in Imbali Unit 14. Scores of community members who gathered outside the court were angry over the news that Mahlaba had been released on bail.

Granting him bail, magistrate Mamsy Boikhutso, said the state was not opposed to giving Mahlaba bail because he had been found at the scene of the crime.

Furthermore, Boikhutso said Mahlaba was not a flight risk and that he had provided the court with an alternative fixed address that was verified.

Mahlaba told the court he intends to plead not guilty to the murder charge.

Madondo’s mother Ntombintombi Madondo told the Maritzburg Echo that her daughter had been murdered in the presence of her three-year-old daughter.

“I was at work when I received a message that my daughter was killed. I hurried home to see what had happened. I had left my daughter at home that morning sleeping and she was fine.”

She said they believe the suspect broke into the house while the deceased was sleeping and attacked her.

“She was stabbed several times in her back, chest, her forehead and in her face. Her room was splashed with blood, her pillow was also soaked with blood. I didn’t ask how many stab wounds she had in total because it was too much for me,” said an emotional Madondo.

She said she was disappointed that Mahlaba had been granted bail.

“I’m very disappointed in the justice system, how can someone who did such an awful thing be granted bail. I fear for my grandchildren because they are also not safe if he [Mahlaba] could murder their mother in cold blood, chances are their lives are at risk too,” she said.
