IT is holiday time again and people are flocking to dams, rivers and swimming pools to have fun. Netcare 911 paramedics and hospital staff had to work fervently to save the life of a two-year-old girl after she got into trouble in a dam last Tuesday.

“This is becoming too common a call that paramedics have to deal with. Please take care when you go to any water hole for a day of fun,” said Netcare’s Chris Botha.

Paramedics recommend that children do not swim without supervision and that parents always make sure they know where their children are.

“They can disappear in the blink of an eye,” he said.

He said that people should refrain from consuming alcohol when going to swim.

“Do not dive into a body of water if you cannot see the bottom. This could lead to severe spinal injuries if you hit your head on an object that is submerged in the water,” he said.

“Make sure your pools are covered and fenced so that children, when they disappear, do not land up in the pool without supervision,” said Botha.
