Let us stand up

2016-06-22 06:00

JUNE 16 is the day that the youth of 1976 used to stand up against the Bantu education system that was imposed on them by the ruling national party at the time.

This fight played a significant role in political transformation and political freedom, which is why we commemorate 16 June today.

However it is my view that we must not only commemorate this day, but we must also take precedent from the youth of 1976 by using this month to fight against the injustices of the current government systems that are imposed on us the youth of 2016, particularly those who are black and the poor.

As the youth of South Africa, we cannot say we are free when we do not have jobs even after graduating.

It is a struggle to find a job in South Africa. Twenty two years into democracy the youth unemployment rate is more than 50%. You cannot claim to have freed the youth of South Africa if you have not liberated the means for them to run their own lives, particularly economically.

If the youth of 2016 do not make it their responsibility to stand up against these injustices, nothing will change.

Our education system is extremely substandard. You only receive good education if your parents are rich enough to have money to send you to the so called “model c schools”, which creates the impression that quality is only for the rich.

If the standards do not improve, black and poor youth will struggle to gain access to tertiary education, most will then go to FET colleges where expectations have been adjusted downwards. College graduates will have poor work ethics and standards.

Our lower education system sets the youth of this country up for failure. If our education systems remains the same, then sadly the future looks bleak for the youth of 2016 and the next generations to come.

It is up to the youth of 2016 to decide.

Frantz Fanon once said “each generation must, out of relative obscurity, discover its own mission, fulfill it, or betray it.”

The mission of our generation is to stand up against the self defeating systems of the current government so that the next generation to come will exist in a fertile environment - an environment of education and economic opportunities.

If we, the youth of 2016, succumb to these unjust systems of our country, history will judge us harshly. The next generation will have nothing to thank from us.

Let us stand up!
