Litter woes

2017-01-18 06:01

MY first training cycle ride of 2017 was cut short by two punctures resulting from glass on the tarmac in Hesketh Drive. They say “hate” is a strong word so let me rather say I despise drivers and passengers who dispose of their glass bottles out car windows.

May I urge our teachers to embark on a simple training programme with their new intake, which the young children can take home and pass on to their parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts.

Or do the teachers share a similar belief to some of the litterers I have confronted that by not littering they are depriving a municipal worker of employment?

While waiting for the traffic lights to change at the Alexandra-College Road intersection recently, the driver’s door of a very expensive German car in front of me opened and the arm of a well-dressed “gentleman” placed his beer bottle in an upright position in the centre of the road before driving off.

Evidently pride ends with the interior of the car. But the fact that pride does exist is a good thing.

Our teachers could surely work on extending that pride to our environment.

May I extend my grateful thanks to the man from Bishopstowe who gave me a lift home.
