BLU Gel apprentice, Shana-lee van der Byl, has been selected to compete in the national round of the WorldSkills hairdressing competition next month at the Durban International Conference Centre. She is the only finalist from KwaZulu-Natal.

The competition, which only takes place every four years, reflects the skills and attributes of the most outward looking and talented hairdressers. Van der Byl, formally from Richmond, moved to Johannesburg, and when she decided to pursue hairdressing, moved to Pietermaritzburg so work at Blu Gel.

“I came specifically to work here [Blu Gel] because I knew that the training I would receive at this salon I would not be able to get anywhere else.”

She has been an apprentice for the past two years and has another two to go. Her tasks on entering the competition were to come up with four styles that represent different aspects in hairdressing.

“We had to develop styles that were different and outstanding taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. This is the kind of hairdresser I want to be. I don’t want to do the usual, I want to be different, that’s why Blu Gel is such a great place for me to learn.”

Van der Byl has been attending workshops for the past year in Musgrave, Durban every week getting a taste of various hairdressing styles as well as working full-time at Blu Gel.

“I didn’t know initially that I was the only one from KZN who was chosen. It’s amazing to be the only one and to know that people recognised my skill at being different. My ultimate goal is to own my own salon, but not in this country,” she said.

She said she is looking forward to the competition, especially the opportunity to show off her creativity.

“I want to win to prove to myself that I have what it takes. I also want to thank my Blu Gel family, they are my biggest support and I couldn’t have gone through this without them.”
