LOCAL talent were the toast of the town when new head coach of the South African Futsal (indoor) national team, João Freitas Pinto, selected a handful of Pietermaritzburg players and one official in Johannesburg last week.

Pinto has trimmed his provisional squad of 48 down to 26 as preparations continue for the upcoming 2016 Caf Futsal Cup of Nations (Afcon), but Renaldo Donnelly, Simphiwe Mgedeza and Trevino Pillay made the cut.

To add another feather to the already colourful indoor soccer cap, the Pietermaritzburg administrator, former M.L. Sultan High School pupil, Ebby Hossen, also general secretary for South African Indoor Football Association (Saifa), was appointed team manager of the national team.

“This is a good step in the right direction for local indoor [futsal].

“A few weeks ago I predicted this type of football was growing in popularity in Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal and all over South Africa. To see ourselves and our youngsters in the SA team speaks volumes about the game,”said Hossen.

Speaking from the camp at Fun Valley in Johannesburg, Donnelly said the training learning curve and players were enjoying it.

“The camp is just out of this world. We are learning a lot and the spirit is pure class.”

SA will host Afcon for the first time from 15 to 24 April.

Last weekend Pinto held a training camp and had the opportunity of taking a closer look at the players he had selected during the Safa interprovincial tournament a few weeks ago.

Known as JP, Pinto says South Africa has the potential to qualify for their first Fifa Futsal World Cup, which will be held in Colombia from 14 September to 2 October.

“The squad, which we have trimmed down, comprises of players with a lot of experience. Many have been playing futsal and five-a-side football for almost 10 years, and the talent they have is just unbelievable.”

JP is scheduled to host another training camp shortly to work on the tactical and technical aspects of his game.
