IT began with dressing Barbie dolls and now a Pietermaritzburg designer is making it big in New York.

Rico Matthew Francois (30) from Chase Valley, a jewellery designer, make-up artist and lifestyle photographer, says his dreams started when he was very young. Francois is now working between Pieter-maritzburg and New York where he designs jewellery.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever Francois said growing up he used to search in his mother’s wardrobe for garments he could cut and turn them into outfits for Barbie dolls.

“Growing up I always knew I would have a career in the fashion industry.

“I remember standing in the front of the mirror as a young boy and trying on my mother’s diamond necklaces and I wanted to know why Marilyn Monroe said ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’. I soon understood that jewellery makes even the darkest moments seem brighter.

“When I moved to New York five years ago I wanted to find inspiration.

“I wanted to bring New York fashion to South Africa. I started going there when they had functions, and soon I will be having my first exhibition in New York.”

He said his designs deal mostly with crystals and pearls because he likes things that are sparkling.

“I only have an online shop for now, but I have bigger visions than this. I also have a website where people can see and read about my work.

“It is very challenging to crack it in the fashion industry, which is why I am unique. I want my work to represent me because I am unique.”
