Lunch for needy communities to be held

2015-11-11 06:00

VETERAN sports journalist and community activist Jerry Barnes continues to uplift needy communities in Ward 34.

Ward 34, where he is from, incorporates Eastwood, Glenwood, Panorama, Esitimeleni, Cinde- rella Park, Malivana, Madiba, Jesmondeen-Emikhukhwini and Thembelihle.

After staging the successful and well supported Ward 34 annual community sports day last month, Barnes embarked on putting together a Christmas lunch and collecting old clothes and toys for about 300 people from Jesmondeen-Emikhukhwini, Esitimeleni and Malivana, which are informal settlements around Ward 34.

The lunch is set for 28 November at 8 Redwood Crescent at 2pm.

“We are heading for the crazy season and people will be having parties all over, but our neighbours, who are less fortunate, will be without anything. In short it means everybody will be having a good time, but families from these areas will remain the same. My target, or my aim, is to sit with these people, especially children from Malivana, Jesmondeen and Esitimeleni and give them lunch, clothes or toys.

“I visited those areas and conditions there are shocking, which makes my heart bleed,” he said.

Barnes has since begun asking for groceries, old clothes, toys or any donations that will be handed out at the lunch.

“I am very grateful to be receiving clothes from friends and family members already, but I won’t stop until I’m satisfied that everything is in place.”

Barnes is appealing to people to contact him or drop off donated items at 8 Redwood Crescent, Panorama Gardens or contact him at 083 521 9553 or e-mail jerryb.barnes228@gmail.com
