Make quality education a priority

2016-03-09 06:00

THIS letter is with reference to the decision taken by the ANC local government with respect to the Scottsville Bowling Club.

The ANC has for the past few months emphasised the importance of education and that this is a priority for them. Clearly these are merely sweeping statements, and have no intention of supporting or investing in our education system as is indicative by the blocking of Scottsville Primary School in acquiring a lease to the Scottsville Bowling Club.

The Department of Education is putting pressure on the school to increase the intake, and under the current facilities this would be detrimental to the quality of education provided, as well as the comfort and safety of pupils.

I also refute the statement that the school has all the facilities it needs. The school has been on the same piece of land for 100 years, despite growing in size to almost 900 pupils. This is the only piece of land the school can use to expand, whereas commercial developers can utilise other parts of the city.

The DA believes and advocates, that quality education is key to improved quality of life. It empowers individuals to obtain a fulfilling job, contribute to the economy and utilise talents to the full. Is this not reason enough for the school to be given preference?
