Mall clothing outlet’s lease not renewed

2016-02-10 06:00

SELFAST shoppers have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the decision taken by Liberty Midlands Mall not to renew the shop’s lease.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever on behalf of Selfast, Junaid Mahomedy director Prunel Trading cc, said the lease cancellation was not something that was expected because the shop has been at the mall for 12 years, since Liberty Mall opened.

“We were given three months to vacate after doing a full revamp, spending half a million [rand] on the store three years ago,” he said.

When asked what the reasons for the cancellation were, Mahomedy said the mall claimed to want “more upmarket-international brand stores” and believes it could also be because their prices are “too low”. Facebook users took to Selfast Clothing’s page to express their unhappiness about the closure as the shop offered them fashionable clothing at reasonable prices. Some even spoke of beginning a petition for the shop to be reopened. According to Liberty Midlands Mall general manager, Muhammad Varachia, “the landlord has taken a decision not to renew the Selfast store lease at Midlands Mall”.

“Selfast was provided with a letter indicating the landlord’s intentions, and accepted and returned such letter in September 2015. The tenant mix for the mall is reviewed regularly, as per usual business practice, and we would like to take the opportunity to wish Selfast well in its future endeavours.”
