MARITZBURG United will play away at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria against SuperSport United in the MTN 8 Wafa Wafa competition first leg on Saturday at 8.15pm, and fans are optimistic the team will pull it off.

Team of Choice followers and former players say United is on a roll and may experience their best season yet.

Many say that playing away in the first leg does not mean anything and will suit the underdogs - United - but their tactic is not to be nervous, to relax and stick to the coach’s game plan.

The well travelled, former Moroka Swallows, Bafana Bafana and retired Maritzburg United star defender Peter Petersen feels that the Maritzburg players will have to approach the game with cool heads, be strong and follow the coach’s plan to the letter.

“Maritzburg United started off perfectly and is looking good.

“What is also encouraging is that the head coach, Fadlu Davids, is doing well and has managed to convince the players to believe in themselves and positively deliver.

“Playing is not that tricky, remember this is a first leg, so maybe the home team will be under pressure and make a few mistakes.

“As far as I see Maritzburg United will be treated as underdogs, but they are able to pull it off and surprise a lot of people,” said Petersen.

One of the Maritzburg United’s regular faces at their games, Vuyo “Supporters Queen” Mkhize, says her team will go to Pretoria on Saturday as underdogs, but will come back holding their heads high.

“Remember what people said before the quarters-finals of the MTN8 between us and Mamelodi Sundowns?

“To us, the so-called big teams are not a problem.

“We have already started marching bravely towards the finals,” said Mkhize.

On Sunday at 3.15pm Benni McCarthy’s team, Cape City, will have an interesting date with BidVest Wits at Cape Town Stadium.

The Clever Boys will go all out in the MTN8 competition because they are the last season’s defenders of the trophy.

The second leg fixtures of this competition are scheduled for September 9 and 10.

The Team of Choice will be at home at Harry Gwala Stadium on September 9 at 8.15pm against SuperSport United.

On September 10 at 3.15pm,Wits will host Cape Town City at Bidvest Stadium.
