Matric status

2017-01-18 06:02

SADLY, the National Senior Certificate has lost its status. It is no longer the key that will open a door to higher education and job opportunities.

What happens to these young adults with a sub-standard education? They are being set up for failure as they start varsity unprepared, resulting in about 40% of students dropping out after their first year.

The government should be focused on the dropoff rate, not the pass rate. Honest discussions need to take place about how to implement solutions.

Urgent legal action needs to be taken against those who are defrauding the department.

New methods of measuring the performance of schools, principals and teachers need to be put in place and systems that track the progress of things like the delivery of textbooks are imperative. Parents, teachers, pupils and the government need to work hard to make sure that we get back to the point where a matric certificate is a highly valued qualification that leads to great opportunities.
