Meaning of Christmas celebrations

2015-12-16 06:00

THANK you Nicole John for the front page article in The Fever of 9 December 2015, informing the public to be vigilant.

The following is intended to enlighten readers about the origins of what many call “the silly season”.

December 25 is only one of three Christmas celebrations in various parts of the world - January 8 is the Eastern European Christmas, while the Greek and Russian Orthodox ?Churches celebrate theirs on January 11. Nowhere in any of the plus 2753 versions of the Bible are any of the above dates mentioned as the birth date of “Kirstos” as Jesus was referred to in the original Greek Scriptures.

Much later, astrological calculations approximate His birth date some time between 20 and 25 October in the year 4BC.

Monks who started compiling the Bible about 450 years later in Greek, since there were no systems of writing in the European world, confused December with other Pagan festivals which were celebrated at that time. Christmas in the last two and a half centuries has become so commercialised that it’s significance has drowned in the variety of drinks and foods advertised in almost every Western Nation.

Observing the solemnity of the occasion by fasting and praying seldom enters the minds of the majority who celebrate it.
