More safety measures on Townhill

2016-06-22 06:00

PUT another arrester bed on Townhill. I commend the previous writers on the subject. Being a Hilton resident, I am compelled to use the Townhill section of the highway more than I care to. There is a fatal accident on the down run at least twice a month. Therefore, more preventative measures are needed.

My feelings on this issue were elevated last week, thanks to a business call to a large mill in Midvaal, where a 26-wheeler caught my eye as I recognised it to be a make assembled in Pietermaritzburg in the mid-seventies.

I chatted to the driver, who is as pleased with his “still manual, gear-boxed” truck as the owners of the old cars at Cars in the Park.

A 40-year-old 26-wheeler with in excess of 40 tons in the trailers - could this truck marshal a 40-something ton load down Townhill, using first gear, travelling at 10km/h from Hilton to the level road after the Peter Brown off-ramp?

The trouble, the driver said, is with impatient and frustrated “hotshot drivers” in the new “technologically superior” trucks behind him on Townhill that will break the slow-lane ranks.

So, another arrester bed and visible policing, please. A compulsory stop after the Peter Brown bridge, please. Camera policing to slow and/or control the “newer speeders”, please.

We have to reduce the Townhill casualty rate.
