THE Vodacom Durban July on Saturday promises to be a bang, with more events lined up leading to the race day and beyond.

Head of Durban tourism Philip Sithole said the city expects to make no less than R1 billion during the Durban July week and is expecting about two million visitors to Durban, which will see the hotel occupancy rate averaging at 85% to capacity.

“The city has lined up a variety of events to ensure all our visitors get to experience our warm hospitality, unique culture and amazing talent,” said Sithole.

Here’s what’s in store for an entertaining weekend:


Ultimate Pool Party

uShaka Marine World will begin the Vodacom Durban July fun early, with The Ultimate Durban July Pool Party on Friday from 11 am to 8 pm.

Join Metro FM DJs Adil, Ismail Abrahams, Amon Mokoena, Lerato Kganyago and Moflava. Watch live performances by popular South African DJs and music artists including DJ Tira — owner of a Durban-based record label, hip-hop group Dreamteam, and rappers Riky Rick and Big Nuz.

Dance in the water with friends, family and fans before preparing for the big race day. There will also be loads of prizes to be won. Get tickets on uShaka’s website or at the door. Inquiries: uShaka Marine World at 031 328 8000.


Jack Daniel’s Sound City

Jack Daniel’s Sound City, on Saturday at the Vodacom Durban July, promises a unique experience that combines luxurious hospitality, high fashion and a social atmosphere, together with a quality stage and sound experience.

Heading this year’s line-up are top local acts, including Black Coffee, Mi Casa, Mafikizolo, K.O, Nasty C, Kid X, Aewon Wolf, Speedsta and more. Each year, a few rising local Durban artists are given space in the line-up. This year the up-and-coming artists are DJ Wobbly, Nelz and Breeze.

Tickets at Computicket. The marquee will be open from 11 am to 10 pm.


Opulence Lounge

The new Opulence All White marquee village will be at the Durban July on Saturday, modelled after the annual All White Party.

Hip-hop artist daLES will perform alongside a line-up of all his artist friends and a surprise international act.

The exclusive lounge will feature Zakes Bantwini, Culoe de Song, AKA, Nandi Ngoma, Riky Rick, Major League and Speedsta. Also joining the line-up is Somizi, Moozlie, Dash, Nigerian DJ Snypes and V Entertainment’s Shane Eagle.

Situated at The Ascorts inside the racecourse, guests will have easy access to the lounge, with a fully serviced bar from 10 am to 10 pm. Tickets at Computicket.


Mother of All Parties

The Mother of All Parties, the annual closing party for the SA Music Conference, is stepping it up a notch this year, having confirmed Chris Brown on the line-up.

Joining him are American artist Tinashe, Grammy award-winning rapper and U.S. actress Eve, Detroit hip-hop outfit Slum Village, and a stellar list local talent including Cassper Nyovest, Riky Rick, Emtee, DJ Oskido, DJ Fresh and many more.

The Mother of All Parties takes place on Saturday at the Growthpoint King’s Park stadium. Tickets at Computicket.


Banger in the Hangar

On Saturday, from 8 pm, is the Banger in the Hangar party at Virginia Airport’s Hangar 8, the general aviation airport located 10 kilometres north of Durban and 15 minutes away from Greyville Racecourse.

The venue hosts a party with popular local DJs as your pilots, including DJs Warren G, Ameeth Shah, Monstrocity, DJ Cassie, Sash B, Ryan the DJ as well as headliner acts — Chrizz Beatz, a hip-hop DJ taking SA by storm, as well as DJ Nate, who will be spinning the decks in their “cockpit”.

There will also be a DJ competition.

Young Mula Baby

Rocca Bar presents the Young Mula Baby Durban July after party, from 8 pm on Saturday.

Situated at 9 Cobham Grove, off Umgeni Road in Durban, Rocca Bar promises to pull out all the stops with local DJs Warren G, Ameeth Shah, Monstrocity, DJ Cassy, Shave V, Ryan the DJ, DJ Sante and Jits C Jits.

Partygoers can get out their lucky charms and indulge in the casino-inspired theme with blackjack and roulette. Roll the dice or spin the wheel to hit the jackpot and win prizes.
