Municipal swimming pool staff not paid

2016-11-02 06:00

I WENT for an early morning swim at Alexandra Swimming Bath last week, only to find that the gates were locked.Upon asking the security guard why this was so he said that the staff had not been paid so the gates were locked in protest.

A little dumbfounded, I then spoke to one of the lifeguards, who confirmed the story. Apparently all the cleaning staff and lifeguards have not been paid for two months, so they have staged a protest by locking the gates to the public pool.

I found the staff friendly and helpful, even in their difficult situation. Even though I was frustrated that I couldn’t swim, I felt even more angry that the municipality had not paid its workers on time.

We all know how tight finances are at the moment, and when our salaries have not been paid we then all may have to resort to desperate measures.

Despite the inconvenience to the general public, I hope that this silent protest makes the powers that be wake up and pay their staff.
