THEIR netball talent is nurtured on a dusty pitch, which the principal said, becomes muddy on rainy days, a pitch with one raised goal ring secured to the ground with rocks, but despite these challenges they have been chosen to play in the national U12 netball tournament.

The Mount Pleasant Primary School U12 netball team is to represent KZN at the 2017 National Primary Schools’ Netball Championships in Boksburg from July 28 to 29.

However, this no-fee school is ranked as quintile 1 and does not have funds to send the team to the tournament.

The netball convener, Hlengiwe Shezi, said most of the team members’ parents are unemployed, who live in Hopewell, an impoverished area where the school is, and cannot afford to pay for their children.

“That is why we are pleading with businesses and people to assist the team with a donation,” she said.

The team needs R350 for the affiliation fee, R9 000 for transport, R9 500 for accommodation, R8 800 for food and R6 500 for their kit.

Shezi said the school has initiated fund-raising drives to help the team get to the tournament.

“We’ve tried several fund-raising methods like sending a request for donation letters to companies, but nothing fruitful has come of this,” said Moodley.

This is not the first time the school’s netball team has been selected to take part in the national tournament, but this year’s players hope to perform better than their predecessors.

“I want us to win and not come fourth like the school team that went before us did,” team captain Thandeka Memela said, a sentiment shared by teammate and co-captain Nomusa Ngcongo.

The coach, a netball player in the KZN league, Mfundiso “Stash” Silwane, said he decided to assist the school as a coach when he realised it was lacking in this department.

“I just wish that one day these children will get to play netball at the level I am playing at right now.”

Donations can be made directly into the school’s bank account.
