PCB takes ‘bold in black’ stand

2015-12-16 06:00

PIETERMARITZBURG is taking a stand against women and child abuse today.

The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) will mark the end of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign by making a public stand at the Royal Showgrounds main arena at 10am.;

With 2015 being the 24th year that the 16 Days campaign has run, the PCB is calling on locals to help make a difference. In a statement the PCB said the theme for the international campaign this year was, “From peace in the home to peace in the world: make education safe for all”.

“We need to make a conscious decision to stand together, to take ownership of the problem and to take action to eradicate it.”

It said the chamber will be making the statement by being “bold in black” referring to what will be worn on the day.

“We must stand together and eradicate the vulnerability. As long as women are reliant on others for their survival, they are vulnerable to abuse. And abuse begets more abuse.”

According to a study by the South African Medical Research Council in November 2009, half of women murder victims are killed by their intimate male partners.

“Over 40% of men report in research interviews having been physically violent to a partner and between 40% and 50% of women report having been victims of abuse,” said the study. — WR.
