YOU have to be committed and you have to be prepared to put in the extra hours to achieve high marks at school, said Pieter­maritzburg Girls’ High School matric Thashmil Somaroo.

She was one of the school’s top three matrics this year, and achieved seven distinctions for English, Afrikaans­, mathematics, life orientation, accountancy, life sciences and physics.

She plans to study accounting at the University of Witwatersrand next year.

She said family and friends had also been important to support and motivate her through her studies.

The top matric pupil at the school was Salona Burdhu, who intends to study actuarial science in the Western Cape this year.

Salona achieved distinctions in English, Afrikaans, maths, life orientation, accountancy, life sciences and physics.

Nolwazi Mbanjwa, another top performing matric at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High with seven distinctions, said one of the motivating aspects for her final exams was that she had been told it was important for her to maintain her academic standards for a bursary.

She plans to study actuarial science at the University of Cape Town next year. She achieved distinctions in English, Afrikaans, maths, life orientation, accountancy, life sciences and physics.
