THE Pink Mynah Festival - “Pietermaritzburg’s Pride” - is taking place from 22 to 29 October.

The programme includes an arts and film festival, a cheese and wine evening, the Pink Mynah Pageant, the street parade and Pink Picnic, all of which will be held in Pietermaritzburg.

The Pink Mynah Festival is organised by the Pietermaritzburg Gay and Lesbian Network and is the main fund-raising event for GLN, sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture and endorsed by KZN Tourism and the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association.

The festival begins with the arts and film festival at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum and explores different forms of art, including theatre, music, photography and poetry.

On display will also be some of the exhibitions from last year’s hate-crime exhibitions and images and short films from our photography and film competition, which feature local members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and intersexed (LGBTI) community.

There will also be the premiere screening of I am Rose, the fourth film from My Name is Rose. This is a platform to engage artistic narratives of the LGBTI realities in South Africa

The cheese and wine evening will be held on 22 October at the Aha Imperial Hotel, where you can taste some great wine and cheeses. There will also be an auction of selected pieces by internationally renowned photographer Michael Ashby.

Ashby’s “Alternative”, is a collection of portraits that have been shot using ambrotype, a 160-year-old form of “alternative photography”.

The Pink Mynah Pageant will be held at the Aha Imperial Hotel on 28 October. This event is one of the highlights of the festival, as aspiring young people from all walks of life come to compete for the titles of Mr and Ms Pink Mynah 2016.

The pageant is one of a kind as there are both the Mr and Ms categories. There are no restrictions on entries in these categories. There will also be a fashion show by local designers and drag queen performances by My Name is Rose.

Tickets are R50 at the door.

On 29 October, members and supporters of the LGBTI community will march with pride from Freedom Square to the YMCA. This year’s parade promises to the best and we invite everyone to join in the celebrations, which also helps raise awareness of LGBTI rights.

Once at the YMCA, the Pink Picnic will begin. There will be entertainment from Kwesta, Joocy, Qadasi and Maqhinga, Klutch Kollective, DJ Le Soul, ADJ, Joey Drumz, Trinity Drag Queens, and more. There is also a raffle for limited edition Pride Shoes, which are made in Spain, so be sure to buy a ticket. - Supplied.
