PMB drivers have no regard for red traffic lights

2016-11-30 06:01

MY job allows me to travel throughout the day and what I have observed is that Pietermaritzburg drivers have a total disregard for red traffic lights.

Everyday it seems to get worse and I am not just talking about taxis.

In any given day, I have observed at least 20 violations of red traffic lights and the perpetrators seem to become more and more bold and brash.

Sometimes the red light has changed and almost a full minute and a half passes and yet the morons still have the gall to drive right through without even thinking about the safety of fellow motorists. The amazing thing is not a single traffic officer is anywhere to be seen. Does Pietermaritzburg still have a working traffic department?

Whatever happened to our traffic cops on motorbikes? Does riding a motorbike rob them of a chance to catch 40 winks or does it deprive them of using municipal property to pick up their children from school?

Our municipality always wants to raise more funds, so how about installing cameras at all traffic lights throughout the CBD?

I am positive that it would make a killing from it, and maybe then errant PMB motorists would be taught a hard lesson. The best way to do this is by hurting their pockets. If the situation is left unattended then I am afraid that soon we are going to have more fatal accidents at traffic lights. Come on PMB traffic department and municipality, show us that you guys are still alive and act now before it is too late.
