Poobie donates running shoes to disabled athlete

PIETERMARITZBURG businessman and the 2016 PCB Business of the Year award winner Poobie Naidoo again displayed his soft spot in helping the underprivileged.

Last week the veteran ultra-marathon athlete donated new running shoes to disabled athlete, David Samuels from Cutwini Village. Samuels will be taking part in this year’s Comrades Marathon.

The 2017 Comrades run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg takes place on June 4.

Naidoo said some weeks ago he received an e-mail from a runner and community member from the Wild Coast, Jane Pennefather, who met the disabled runner while training in the area.

“After reading the request from that e-mail we were emotional and touched. We also discovered that the athlete was not only disabled, but was also an amputee who came from a poor background.

“As a former Comrades Marathon athlete myself, I know it takes a lot of hard work, commitment and dedication to train for this ultra-marathon.

“However, this athlete didn’t commiserate that he only had one leg or that he would have to use his prosthetic leg all the way from Durban to Pietermaritzburg,” said Naidoo.

Pennefather who wrote to Naidoo on behalf of Samuels travelled all the way from the Eastern Cape to receive the new running shoes.

“ I am deeply touched by Poobie’s kind offer to sponsor shoes for David Samuels. We are lucky we still have kind and supportive people like Poobie Naidoo in our country. Without people like him, the poor and deserving of our country would not have a chance. May the Almighty God keep him strong in helping the needy and bless him and his business,” said Pennefather.

Speaking to Maritzburg Echo on the phone Samuels said he was grateful to Poobie Naidoo’s Sports for making it possible for him to run this year’s race. His aim he said is to finish the race so he can meet Naidoo.

“I don’t know what to say, I still can’t believe it and I’m very thankful, humbled and honoured. I will definitely finish the up run and meet and thank the man at the finishing line,” said Samuels.
