ON August 24 the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court sentenced Sanele Difa Ngubane (23), to 22 years for rape. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the rape took place on January 1 in the Emathangeni area in Mpophomeni.

“Just after midnight on the day of the incident, the victim, aged 21, was walking from home to her sister’s house, which was not far away.

While walking she was approached by the accused, who was carrying a bush knife.

“The accused threatened the victim and took her to a nearby bush where she was raped. The victim informed her brothers and a description [of the perpetrator] was given to them.

“They looked for the accused and eventually he was spotted in the area and caught.

“A case of rape was opened and the accused was handed over to the police to be charged.

“The case was handed over to the Howick Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

“The accused was also linked to the rape by means of DNA.”

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the sentence.

“This will send a strong warning to other would-be rapists who think of abusing our children and women.

“I also praise the members of the family who stood up to assist the victim by apprehending the accused and handing him over to the police.

“This is what partnership against crime is all about.

“Victims must report these crimes even if they are intimidated by the abusers,” he said.
