Riding 660kms for a purpose

2017-02-22 06:02

TESSA Hesse of Cadence Cycling rode 660kms in two days last year in the Ride for MRP Foundation raising R85 000.

She and 43 other participants had to contend with soaring temperatures, an electric storm and an unscheduled detour caused by civil unrest along the planned route.

The annual event’s purpose is to raise funds and awareness for Mr Price’s non-profit organisation, thus helping to break the cycle of poverty and inequality in South Africa.

Johannesburg-born, raised in the Midlands and now settled in Pietermaritzburg, Hesse can be described as an enthusiastic and exuberant athlete.

“I was motivated by a desire to ride with meaning and purpose, giving my passion a cause. This event reminded me why I ride - it’s all about the physical and spiritual journey and friendships forged with the same goal in mind,” she said.

Hesse’s commitment earned her a Raleigh Tandem Duo Bike, but even that will serve to benefit more than just her.

“The bike will be used for the Gabran Choc event and displayed at the Cadence Studio in Pietermaritzburg as a reminder to all of our members that we’re so blessed to have the financial and physical means to partake in this sport and to give, be through time, efforts or finances

“As I look back on the Ride for MRP, I realise we all suffered at some point along the way, but this was a team effort. It takes an organisation such as MRP Foundation, event director Kelvin Du Sart and many others to show us how to help,” she said.
