YEKELANI Douglas Mthembu from Sweetwaters thought competitions at supermarkets were just gimmicks to lure more customers, but he now believes they are real after driving away in a new Datsun Go + 7 seater last week.

Mthembu (33) was the winner in the Save U Power Trade car competition that has been running since October 2016 and said he entered the competition a few months ago.

“I received a call last week to say I was one of the 11 finalists in the car competition.

“I didn’t think I stood a chance of winning because there were so many of us,” said Mthembu.

“I can’t believe the car is mine, I am still overwhelmed.

“When I walked over to the car to try and open it my knees were weak. I didn’t think my key would be the one that opens it.

“I am a regular Save U customer and I entered the competition after buying my monthly groceries here.”

Save U manager Haroon Aboobaker congratulated Mthembu.

Aboobaker said the competition was part of their mandate to give back.

“We have been running other random competitions in the store - it is part of giving back to the community and just thanking them for their continued support.”

Mthembu was accompanied by his friends who could not contain their excitement when he opened his prize

“I told him he was going to win, I could feel it.

“When all the other finalists’ keys didn’t open I knew his one would open,” said one of the friends.

The other 11 finalists didn’t go home empty handed - they each received R2 500 grocery vouchers.
