THE draw for this year’s PMB High Schools Football Association Cup was held at Howick High School recently.

In the girls section, defending champions Edendale and previous three-time winners Haythorne are expected to once again feature strongly, but the remarkable growth in the girls’ game means they could be seriously challenged this year, especially with the likes of Hillcrest and GHS, who have entered the cup for the first time.

Howick High won the recent girls six-a-side tournament and will want to show they can do it on the “big stage” now.

In the boys section, St Charles were the Leicester City of last year’s cup and surprised many by winning it.

They have a tough group to get through, first against Haythorne, Treverton and hosts Howick. Three-time finalists Maritzburg College are looking for their first FA Cup success and are joined in their group by Hilton College, who were runners-up at the recent Kloof tournament.

Alex, Linpark and Carter make it a tough group D for Voortrekker and Raisethorpe and Ixopo will be expected to progress from their group, but this tournament has shown over the years that the gap among all the schools is narrowing and there could very well be some unpredictable results.

The tournament is being hosted by Howick High School, with the group games being played on Saturday, August 26.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the Cup Section and the bottom two teams into the Shield Section and these knockout games will be played on Sunday, August 27, with the cup final at 3pm.
