SCRIPTURE Union (SU) in Pietermaritzburg has embarked on a social responsibility project aimed at providing underprivileged children with school shoes for the new year.

Garland Sam, SU director, said this was the first time the project will be rolled out in the city after proving to be a great success in East London.

It is appealing to parents, schools, children and those interested in helping, to donate their old school shoes, which are too small for them and those which they no longer wear.

“The idea is not to donate shoes that are broken or ones that are in such poor condition that parents will not let their children wear them, but rather to donate shoes that are still in good condition, but which have grown too small for the child.

“We are appealing to people to use their discretion when it comes to the condition of the shoes,” said Sam.

Sam said they have identified Pietermaritzburg schools as having children who are in desperate need of decent school shoes.

“These children wear shoes that are broken or too small, but they look after their them even if they are damaged,” said Sam.

SU is appealing to the community to donate black shoes and, if possible, generic school uniforms, which will be distributed to the pupils. SU will have drop-off days on 4, 7 to 9 December at its offices at 165 Peter Kirchhoff.
