IT is difficult sometimes to criticise your elders or seniors in the workplace, family or in sports circles and I find it difficult or traditionally impossible to point out mistakes or stand up to elders.

In most cases faults committed by older or senior people and leaders are often overlooked or swept under the carpet in order to protect their status and position. Maybe for a long time most of us, including yours truly, have tried or have eaten with an uncomfortable lump in our throat trying to overlook, show respect and protect Jomo Sono, owner and head coach of Jomo Cosmos.

The same applies to the former Bafana Bafana captain and Kaizer Chiefs head coach, Steve “Mphathi” Komphela.

Sono needs to sit quietly and examine himself. He needs to make a decision about himself and his club. He also needs to accept and made peace with the fact that he is not a coach for his team Cosmos, he is the founder and owner.

He also needs to understand he is the boss and his job is in the offices of his club. The black prince also needs to look at other South African trendsetters and powerful figures in football such Kaizer Motaung (Kaizer Chiefs owner and chairman), Irvin Khoza (Orlando Pirates and PSL chairman), Farouk Kadodia (Maritzburg United chairman), Manto Madlala (acting PSL CEO and Lamontville Golden Arrows chairperson), Alfred da Costa (Bidvest Wits chairman), Mike Mokoena (Free State Stars chairman), Patrice Motsepe (Mamelodi Sundowns chairman), Khulu Sibiya (SuperSport United chairman), and others.

I take my hat off to most of these officials because you never see them interfering with their technical benches or head coaches. They understand their roles as head of their clubs and always delegate properly and effectively in administration.

The truth is if Sono wants to see his team playing normal and winning games, he needs to behave like the owner, employ the head coach and remain in his office. Sono is over- extending himself because he wants to do everything.

He wants to be the owner, chairman, managing director, talent scout and head coach. Nowadays soccer is not just a game, it is big business and coaches need to be qualified and continually upgrade themselves.

Sono’s ways of coaching is ancient and old-fashioned. It is also clear that Sono’s team - Jomo Cosmos (Ezenkosi) are likely to be relegated to the national first division for the third time if he does not step down.

If Cosmos want to prosper and stay in the PSL, Sono must fire the coach. Unfortunately, in this case, the owner and current head coach is Jomo Sono himself.

The other hot topic among SA’s soccer followers is Kaizer Chiefs and Komphela.

Last weekend Glamour Boys suffered their third straight defeat after a 1-0 home loss to ASEC Mimosas in the CAF Champions League first round.

The way I see it, AmaKhosi are in trouble and in crisis. For the first time in SA soccer history, Chiefs are just another team and there is absolutely nothing special about them.

I may be wrong or out of order, but I think Amakhosi are too big for Komphela.

Also the stage looks too big for him and for him to step aside will be a wise move and will save Chiefs from further embarrassment.
