Shooting the Breeze

2017-06-21 06:03

ALTHOUGH the hard work behind the scenes for the Ward 34 Community Awards on July 29 at 5.30pm at Eastwood Civic Centre is slowly taking shape, I must point out that the local organising committee (LOC) is faced with some challenges.

The fact is the event needs sponsors and financial backers in order for it to take place.

LOC members are working hard and are are committed in making our dream become reality.

LOC members include Mike Amod (Ward 34 councillor), Veronica Dos Santos (senior citizens and community activist), Pastor Ram, Judy Wood Maharaj (community activist and Exco member of Women of Purpose and Empowerment) and myself.

We are all turning our houses upside down looking for whatever we can find from yesteryear such as medals, figurines and trophies to be used at our Ward 34 Community Awards.

I started with other LOC members begging them and asking for potential partners or sponsors to come on board or save the event, but unfortunately, nothing concrete has happened so far.

I want to remind Ward 34 residents, especially business people, that this is a community project to honour those who have contributed positively in uplifting our area. I believe that our event will take place because it’s for the good cause.

I again ask potential partners, donors, backers and sponsors to come forward and join hands with us on this journey. I am also very excited when I think about some Ward 34 residents who are blessing this new community project. Let me again remind you that the event will be star-studded and household names will be honoured - Shaun Donnely (ex-Jomo Cosmos, Mthatha Bush Bucks and AmaZulu), Shane Morrison, Rowan Dolphin (former SA U17, U20 and SAU23), Arthur Bartman (ex-Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper), Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela (former Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundwons and Bafana Bafana captain), Wally Adams (late Ward 34 councillor), Ronnie Frazer (Eastwood businessman), Dr Arendse (former Eastwood medical practioner) and Dr Imtiaz Sooliman (Gift of the Givers) and Eastwood Taxi Association, to name a few). Finally, I must say the list is very long and our aim is honours everybody that deserve to be honoured. Let me again ask businessmen and good Samaritans to please come on board and help us to make this event happen. I can be contacted on 083 521 9553 or e-mail- jerryb.barnes228@gmail.com call at 8 Redwood Crescent, Panorama Gardens and I’m also available on Facebook.
