Shooting the Breeze

2017-08-30 06:02

I AM so looking forward to our long overdue Ward 34 Community Awards.

The event has been confirmed to take place on September 8, at 5pm at the Eastwood Civic Centre.

The local organising committee decided on this date because of some technicalities and logistics that needed to be finalised.

It took a lot of nerve-racking sessions, planning, some disappointments and a few tears to get thus far.

I am very proud of the local organising committee, who have worked hard and
were passionate about the event from day one.

Guidance, passion and a love for his community showed by our Ward 34 councillor, Mike Amod, made everything easy and possible.

May I again take this opportunity to thank everyone who came on board as partners, volunteers, community members and sponsors.

Well done and God bless you. All your hard work will pay off will be seen on September 8 at the event.

Let me again stress my point that I made a long time ago when we started this event.

Our aim is to honour everybody who contributed positively to our Ward 34 community.

This is not a politically affiliated project, it is meant to pay tribute or honour our heroes and heroines in our area.

Remember, the awards recipients names were put forward by the community, not the local organising committee.

Although this is our first event, which
may look small at this stage, the lineup of
recipients is colourful, interesting and eye-opening.

Our 2018 event will be even bigger though and is something to look forward to.

Some of the names that will be honoured tomorrow are Shane Morrison, Rowan
Dolphin (former SA U17, U20 and U23), Shaun Donnely (former Jomo Cosmos,
Umthatha Bush Bucks and AmaZulu),
Cedrick Conway (former SA Welterweight Champion), Lucky Gordon (late SA Karateka), Arthur Bartman (former Kaizer Chiefs
goalkeeper and current Maritzburg United goalkeeper coach), Ebrahim Hossen (South African Indoor Football Association - Futsal), Enver Wiltwer (former Maritzburg United and Free State Stars), Pastor Paine, Pastor Roy, Father Mike Folley, Dr I. Sooliman,
Lucas Bok, Joyce Charlton, Henry Petersen, Shaun Potgieter (former Cape Town Ajax
and Orlando Pirates, Godfrey Tenoff
(University of Free State), Clemmy Row (Leicester City), JC Joshua (boxing), Dr P. Moosa, Ronnie Petersen (Chelsea) Freddie Simons (Rebels), Ronnie Frazer, Rise & Shine League, Barbara Thompson Veronica Dos Santos (Senior Citizens), to mention just a few.
