LAST Friday I was the happiest man on Earth because the long overdue Ward 34 Community Awards, which we had been working hard on for many months, finally took place at Eastwood Civic Centre.

Let me take this opportunity to thank the local organising committee - Pastor Roy Ram, Oddette Hossen, Judy Wood-Maharaj, Veronica Dos Santos, and Ward 34 Councillor Mike Amod - for working tirelessly.

Well-known community activist and former school headmaster, Jay Jugwath, gave an eye-opening speech at the event.

To all our partners, sponsors, volunteers, especially Kaneez Caterers, Poobie Naidoo’s Sports and Amod, from the bottom of my heart, thank you very much for coming on board and may the Almighty God bless you all.

It was touching to see Councillor Amod using his own money to make the event possible.

Oddette Hossen and Deon “Rush” Warren also went the extra mile to make sure the event was a success.

I also thank the Ward 34 community, recipients and our guests who attended in their numbers.

I was touched to see our elders and former managers, who started soccer clubs and contributed towards development - Ronnie Petersen, Freddie Simons, Shirley Green, Chris Morrison, Ian de Jager, Rise and Shine League, Veronica Dos Santos and Amod, to mention a few from Eastwood, waiting to be honoured.

Some who received awards included Shane Morrison, Shaun Donnelly, Ebrahim Hossen, Arthur Bartman, Godfrey Tennoff, Clemy Raw, Cyril Booysen, Rowan Dolphin, Darryl Gregory, Sedwyn George, Cedric Conway and Victor Vertuin.

I again make my message clear, the function was not about or affiliated with any political organisation, race or religion, it was aimed at honouring the people that contributed positively in our area.

Thank you to the religious leaders and pastors who attended and blessed our first Ward 34 Community Awards.

This event will be back again next year at the same time, but better and bigger, and remember us in your prayers so we may secure more sponsors.
