SIYABONGA Football Club in KwaNxamalala, recently held its end-of-season award ceremony by awarding its players, who put the football team’s name at the top of the log during the season.

Club coach Michael Mngadi said that the team worked very hard to reach their current status.

He said that every year they hold a ceremony to thank everyone for their hard work.

“This was our token of appreciation. The prizes were sponsored by Terry Peate Racing. Siyabonga has 19 players and two management members - a football manager and a general manager,” she said.

Mngadi said that the Siyabonga Football Tournament was established on 17 March, 2002. “We wanted to help the youth in rural areas. They have no form of entertainment and by starting the football club, we wanted to keep them busy and to promote healthy lifestyles,” said Mngadi.

The club started in 2002 with players in the U12 team.

“In 2004 we formed U15 and that was when we joined (Maritzburg and District Football Association) MDSA. We played the MDSA U15 division and finished as runners up. The following year we were promoted to U17 and we won the MDSA league. In 2006 we saw that the team was ready for bigger challenges and we then upgraded to a senior team. That was when we registered under the Sweetwaters Football Association.

“We finished first and were promoted to the metropolitan league under the Msunduzi Local Football Association. We spent five seasons there and we were then promoted to the SAB league under the uMgungundlovu region. We did well as we ended up in the top eight,” said Mngadi.

He thanked Sizanani Mazulu Transport and Terry Peate Racing for their support towards their victory.
