Speaker must serve all, not just her party

2016-09-28 06:00

THE hype surrounding the newly elected speaker in the Msunduzi Municipality is enacted every five years. The results have always been the same.

Jabu Ngubo’s promises to change the way things are done are welcomed. Back to school for councillors has to be the best way forward.

The election of these individuals, in most cases, failed to reflect their capabilities or the skills needed to satisfy the needs of the community they have promised to serve.

The speaker must exercise her powers when it comes to matters that affect the entire community in our city, irrespective of which party councillors belong to. Allowing the majority party to out-vote the opposition on a proposal simply because it did not come from themselves, is not on.

This mindset has to change or we will have another five years of mismanagement, non-service delivery, nepotism, etc.

The council’s “Reporting Tool” must be read by the speaker at all ward committee meetings and acted on.

Putting it away in file 13 is not acceptable. This will only lead to more frustration from ward councillors, ward committee members and the community, as in the previous term.

Ngubo could become famous for being the first speaker to work for the community and not for a party.

Let us wait and see how this develops - success or failure, time will tell. Best wishes to her and the new council. Remember, you work for the entire city.
