ST Charles College lifted the Vodacom Nxt Lvl PMB High Schools FA Cup after an exciting tournament held at the weekend.

They were certainly not rated as one of the favourites for the tournament but everything seemed to align for them as they won the coveted trophy for the first time.

St Charles had earlier beaten Raisethorpe Secondary on penalties after a dramatic semi-final in which Raisethorpe had equalised in the last minute of the match.

For Raisethorpe, it was a case of one penalty shoot-out too many, after they had knocked out host Carter High on penalties in the quarter finals. In the other semi-final, Maritzburg College won a gruelling encounter 1-0 against defending champions ML Sultan Secondary after a brilliant goal by Mlamuli Hlongwa.

The stage was thus set for a classic final between St Charles and Maritzburg College who had also played each other in the group stage. In that encounter, neither side could find an edge and it ended 0-0.

The final seemed to be going the same way, with Maritzburg College having most of the possession and St Charles defending resolutely and launching counter attacks.

With five minutes to go and the large crowd starting to settle in for penalties, St Charles, exhorted on by their coaches Gary Ritchie and Mzamo Cele, started one of those counter attacks down the right wing and a low cross was turned in by striker Luyanda Mazeka to give them the lead.

Maritzburg College then laid siege on the Saints’ goal for an equaliser, but they came up against a blue wall that held firm.

In the girls’ section, Edendale Technical College were peerless and won the cup without conceding a goal in the entire tournament.

They defeated Haythorne Secondary in the final.

Special mention must be made of Edendale’s Lonathemba Mhlongo, who was awarded Player of the Tournament, Top Scorer (eight goals) as well as Goal of the Tournament.

She was rewarded with a tablet from the sponsors for her efforts, as were the other major prize winners.
