MAMA Ntombi’s Community Projects (MNCP) recently received funds from the Monrovia Rotary Club in California to provide 253 children at Umsilinga Primary School with a year’s supply of basic stationery kits.

There are 1 265 destitute children at the school most of whom are orphaned and living with grandmothers or caregivers, and some are in child-headed households.

MNCP assists the school by conducting extra English lessons and during the lessons teachers found that children were borrowing pens from each other.

“One would write and pass the pen to a neighbour. This slowed down the teaching and learning process,” said Sandra Pillay, MNCP programme manager.

MNCP adopted Umsilinga Primary School in the Ezinketheni informal settlement to enable the organisation to reach a wider group of children.

Pillay said there are many children in need of stationery and appealed to the community to contribute in either cash or kind.
The provision of a basic stationery kit would consist of five HB pencils, one ruler, five blue ball-point pens, one eraser, one Pritt glue stick and one pencil box. - Supplied.
