Students must pay to study

2016-09-28 06:00

ARE university staff members and their immediate families studying for free? Universities across South Africa are having a lot of ongoing protests and shut-downs concerning fees.

The students are once again unhappy and threaten violence with minister Blade Nzimande’s fee announcement on Monday. Students demand free education for all. It is of great importance that if staff members and their family study for free, this issue must be taken into serious consideration as a matter of urgency.

Just one staff member and two family members study fees add up to more or less R100 000. How many hundred thousands are being lost with these free studies? Every student who is studying must pay.

It is unfair that staff and their families study free as this is one of the contributing factors to the university’s lack of funds.

It’s unfair that the poor have to pay through government loans and the middle-class take bank loans while university staff and families study free. All students must pay to study and no studying student should be exempt from paying university fees. All students must be treated equally.
