WELL-KNOWN Pietermaritzburg figure and owner of Lock and Key solutions, Maritsa Gouws, has been selected in the Top 100 of Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs South Africa and is looking for the city to back her in the contest.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Gouws said that she is thrilled to be a part of Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs SA which she referred to as a “women empowerment contest not a beauty pageant.”

“I have an obsession for changing young girl’s lives. This contest is about promoting a women’s inner beauty and showing off their authenticity, rather than being focused on what we look like,” she said.

Gouws is no stranger to the charity and outreach sector in Pietermaritzburg. She established herself as the mascot for Pietermaritzburg Community Chest as Super M last year and spent a significant amount of time raising funds for the organisation dressed as the city’s superhero.

She will now be shifting attention to Cansa, the official Mrs SA charity of choice, however maintained that she will always be Super M for Community Chest. She is also the chairlady for the South African Council of Business Women in Pietermaritzburg and was a finalist for the SACBW business woman of the year in 2015.

Gouws is the only contestant from Pietermaritzburg participating in the contest and is calling on the city to get behind their local girl and give her support.

“My aim is to show that Pietermaritzburg is no longer the sleepy hollow, we are the vibrant valley. But in order to do this I need the support of my community,” she said.

There are two ways support Gouws. The first is to vote for her picture on the Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs South Africa page by first liking the page and then the photo. The second is to get on board as a sponsor for her journey on the contest.

Amanda Louw, a top 100 finalist herself last year, has joined forces with Gouws and will be her mentor for the duration of the contest.

“We are both grounded and we know as a team we can achieve so much in terms of touching the lives of younger girls and inspire them to focus on inner beauty and confidence,” said Gouws.

The top 25 will be announced on 29 April at Emperors Palace, the home of Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs SA. Throughout that weekend, the contestants will go through an interview process with four judges headed by principal judge, Cindy Nel.

Gouws said that she is looking forward to the challenge of working towards building the brand of Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs SA, especially in Pietermaritzburg, and to change the perception of the contest.

“It’s hard work but you have to put in the hard work and the effort in order to achieve success. I am fortunate that I have a very supportive husband; I couldn’t have gone so far if it wasn’t for him. We are team Gouws. My sons are also very proud of me. I am also blessed with fantastic staff who, if I win the title, are more than capable to take care of the business for me,” she said.
