Teacher leaves behind a wonderful legacy

2016-02-24 06:00

IT is with deep regret and a sense of sadness that teachers and pupils, present and past, learnt of the death of Sue Rautenbach, a prominent teacher at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High.

I had the privilege of attending an institution such as Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, an institution where girls became young ladies, because of the teaching staff of the school, and a teacher such as her.

I have the fondest memories of sitting in her history classes. I recall being lost in timeless imagination and captivated when she spoke about history.

The great European artists Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo that painted the Sistine Chapel. Although I am a devout Christian, she had us enchanted when she passionately spoke about Greek mythology.

She used to become so enthralled on these topics she would often divert to various topics that challenged us to think, reason and push us beyond our own understanding. She was very affectionate towards her pupils.

The late Mrs Rautenbach was a very firm disciplinarian like all PMB GHS teachers were to enable them to transform girls into pioneering, empowered and accomplished ladies.

Mrs Rautenbach was one of the few people I knew that was passionately well versed in Latin. In my generation, this was nothing less than a wow.

Lives that leave legacies such as hers are perfect examples of women who don’t necessarily have to travel the world to make an impact on an individual’s life.

She proved that in the “back yard” of Pietermaritzburg she could impact on many young souls. As did the other teachers I so fondly remember from PMB GHS.

Yes Mrs Rautenbach, we do still keep to the left. Then it was on the school corridors and now on the roads. We salute you for the legacy you bestowed unto your pupils.
