The revolution will not be televised

2016-06-22 06:00

THIS week we have a public holiday to reflect on the brave uprising of June 16, 1976.

Unfortunately, due to heavily censored state media at the time, not much footage is available of it. How ironic then that our state broadcaster has recently taken a decision to do the same thing and not film violent acts against the state.

This goes against the democratic principle that the public has a right to know what is happening in the country.

At a local government level, citizens have a right to know what is happening in their metros and municipalities, and yet we in Msunduzi are forced to operate in a similarly heavily censored council, where decisions are taken without representation, often under the guise of ‘confidential’ matters.

As the Democratic Alliance, we are committed to open and transparent governance. The recent happenings, such as the suspension of the Municipal Manager and Internal Auditor and the “confusion” around the appointment of the current Municipal Manager, indicates that there is no transparency as both citizens and members of council have to learn of these decisions through the press and not through established municipal structures.

This is not a municipality committed to open and transparent governance. On 3 August, vote for a government that will work for you - not the other way around.
