The value of a part-time job

WE as parents should encourage our children to work and grow.

Many pupils, especially those in high school, are wondering whether they should get part-time jobs. This is an appeal to all students and pupils to make good use of the school holidays, instead of wasting away the time sleeping, playing video games and doing nothing.

Here is an opportunity to find part-time work. Even working in low-skilled jobs, such as in a fast-food restaurant, can be of benefit when it comes to getting a well-paid job.

Besides learning skills they will practise all their lives, having a part-time job also teaches people how to interact with others.

In addition, when a pupil has a part-time job it instils a work ethic in them. Once pupils start earning their own money, they will realise how hard it is to earn money.

They will also start appreciating the things their parents do for them and understand that money doesn’t grow on trees.

It teaches our children the value of money because they will start cherishing it because they earned it themselves.

Pupils taking on a job on top of their studies will have less free time than non-working pupils and this will keep them away from nefarious activities.

It also provides an opportunity to expand their knowledge and thus improve their general knowledge.

Another option is community service. Pupils may think it’s not worth their time to get involved in the community because it doesn’t pay, however, there are several benefits that volunteering can provide that no other job can.

Community service makes them more aware of, and interested in, issues of social justice. Keep in mind that most universities like to admit students who are actively involved in activities that better themselves and the world.

Pupils who have been involved in community service in high school show universities they will be the type of student who will be actively involved in making the college community a better place to be. We as parents should encourage our children to work and grow.
