Time to clean up our litter act

2016-01-13 06:00

PENNY Sparrow’s rude and unnecessary racist remarks have overshadowed the other point she was trying to make. Are South Africans terrible litterers? Yes, many are - many leave their mess on streets and in parks, and in the corridors of public buildings.

Littering is disrespectful to the environment and others. It means other people have to cope with the remains and packaging of your food, party or private ablutions. It costs municipalities to deal with litter, money that could be spent on repairing infrastructure.

Littering is unsanitary and unsightly. It brings rats, flies and cockroaches, which can carry disease.

South Africa prides itself on being a tourist destination, but litter must be off-putting to tourists.

Who wants to sit on a beach or in a park that looks like a rubbish dump? Come on South Africans, show pride in your country and respect for other people. Clean up your mess. It is not difficult to put your litter in a plastic bag and dump it in a bin. If there is no bin nearby, take it home and put it in the rubbish bin.

I call for a national #LitterMustNotFall campaign to urge litterers to clean up their act.

Take-away franchises should also come up with packaging that is quickly biodegradable, or that is recyclable and could be returned for a small fee.
