Trucker situation needs action now

2016-08-17 06:00

THERE were so many trucks blocking the road last Wednesday night, outside the 24-hour Spar on New England Road, that we couldn’t pass.

Motorists were backed up and flicking their lights to try to get the truckers to move. There was a traffic police vehicle parked on the off-ramp, doing nothing.

There was another one going down the other off-ramp, doing nothing, but the cherry on top was the traffic police vehicle that drove past all of us jammed-in motorists, also doing absolutely nothing about the situation.

When discussing this subject with a traffic police friend, his reply was: “It’s not their jurisdiction.” Apparently there are traffic officers who patrol the freeways, and traffic officers who patrol our cities.

I read a recent newspaper article headed: “Cops decline to help victim”, “Not our area, cops tell PMB man”. What a joke that people can blatantly break the law in front of our police service and get away with it.

Concrete blocks were put along the pavement to halt the repeated destruction of the pavement by these truckers. Now, they just park in the traffic lane, switch their trucks off and go into Spar to shop. Fining these truckers (we have witnessed this on the odd occasion) is clearly not working and more drastic action needs to be taken.

Why not park a tow-away truck in the area permanently, and impound the trucks that blatantly break the law. Enough is enough now. When will something be done about this?
