A TOTAL of five students from the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion will be among the designers competing at this year’s Tsogo Sun Sprint Fashion competition.

Second-year students Patrick Ferguson, Buhle Shange, Zanele Makgalaka, Amanda Mondlane and Anika Mahadeo were all selected to take part in the competition this Saturday, May 27.

This year the theme for the event and Fashion competition is “Unrein Your Style” and designers and fashionistas have been encouraged to express their individuality.

Shange (28) from Ashburton said she was excited to be one of the students picked to showcase their garments at one of the city’s biggest fashion spectacles.

“All the students were given an opportunity to design garments last year in preparation for the Sprint and from there they picked the best five to showcase at the event.”

Shange said her garment took two weeks to make citing that the challenging part was sewing the co-ordinated bead work.

“I bought the leopard print first inspired by nature and then decided to buy the other fabric. I had to have beads to show that the outfit was made for an African princess, which was in line with the theme ‘Princess of Africa’.”

The fashion designer said she is inspired by South African designers Khosi Nkosi and Thula Sindi.

“I love that they make clothes inspired by Africa. Khosi Nkosi plays around with a lot of African prints while also creating clothes that have an incredible fit on the wearer.

“Thula Sindi is designer who has tapped into the international stage and is retailing his garments for a larger audience. I love that she makes contemporary garments that are also sophisticated.”

Shange said she hoped to emerge as one of the top designers at the Tsogo Sun Sprint Fashion competition.

“I have a passion for fashion designing and this competition is an opportunity and platform for me to showcase my garment so people can see my talent.”
