THE UKZN Impi seem to be taking one step forward and two steps back after their third consecutive defeat in the 2017 Varsity Shied, losing 21-16 to FNB TUT at the TUT Stadium in Pretoria on Monday.

The result saw Impi drop to fifth position on the Varsity Shied log, having won only once in five rounds — a 16-10 victory over FNB UFH in the competition’s third round.

Despite being awarded five points for their match against FNB WSU last week, after the Eastern Cape side was docked 10 points for fielding ineligible players in two matches, including the UKZN showdown, the KZN students are still scratching their heads, with their hope of finishing in the top half this season now dented.

Their next assignment will be against tournament strugglers FNB Rhodes, who are yet to win a game this season.

The Grahamstown franchise are bottom of the Varsity Shield, having lost all five matches with just two points collected, and will be eager to make amends when the two sides clash in the Eastern Cape next Monday. Kickoff is at 6.30pm.
