MUNICIPALITIES across the country have resolved to phase in water restrictions due to reduced water consumption, in response to low dam levels and the battle with the devastating conditions of the current drought situation.

However, residents of Smero in Edendale are concerned that billions of gallons of water have been wasted over the past three years due to a burst underwater pipe in the area.

Residents are furious that the municipality is doing little to resolve the matter, which they said, has been reported on numerous occasions.

Resident Jacob Mfekayi said the water leakage is causing a lot of damage and has created a big hole in front of his concrete driveway.

“I have personally been to the municipality to report the leaking pipe so it can be repaired but till today nothing has been done. Even the previous ward councillor knew we were facing such a problem, the current ward councillor is also aware. Municipal workers arrive, look at the damage and leave and never come back to repair it. We have exhausted all our options.”

Mfekayi claimed the steady stream of water runs down the road all day and damages people’s houses.

“We think it is an old infrastructure pipe that needs to be fixed with a newer model. Our house walls are getting damaged, there are cracks due to this moisture that’s penetrating through the foundation. I fear what will happen the day the wall can no longer take the water and it collapses. This is a hazard that can easily be avoided by the municipality,” said Mfekayi.

Another resident Nomusa Hlatshwayo said when municipal workers are fixing other damaged pipes in the area and the water is switched off the stream of water also gets cut.

“This is a clear indication that its one of their pipes that needs to be fixed.

“They always preach that we must save water but we have fresh clean water here being wasted on a daily basis, it’s unacceptable. We cannot afford to have water running freely unused when we have a water crisis in the country.”

Hlatshwayo said they are the ones who must dig into their pockets to fix and repair all the damage they are experiencing in their homes caused by this running water.

Msunduzi municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said she will discuss the matter with the water and sanitation manager and ensure it is attended to with urgency.
