Pay less for fuel

MOTORISTS will be paying less for petrol in March, while the price of diesel will increase, according to the Department of Energy.

The petrol price will come down by 69 cents a litre from midnight on Wednesday, March 2, while the wholesale price of diesel will increase by up to 15c/l.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will increase by 17c/l and maximum retail price of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) will drop by R1,20 per kg.

“The average international product prices of petrol decreased while diesel and illuminating paraffin increased during the period under review,” the department said in a statement. - Fin24.

Friday’s freak storm

A freak storm on Friday night left residents in PMB with windows rattling, trees swaying and petrified pets as winds were unusually strong. UKZN students protest at PMB campus

Students at UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg campus turned to violence again last week in support of the outsourced workers who wanted to be hired permanently. They attacked security guards with stones, sticks, firecrackers and glass bottles, broke windows and set two university vehicles alight. Student grievances include high fees, racism, a lack of student funding, insufficient residential accommodation, inhumane living conditions and the outsourcing of contract workers. Protests are expected to continue this week.

Premier Mchunu addresses the State of the Province

KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu gave his 2016 State of the Province address at the Royal Showgrounds last Thursday. He announced that nearly R900 million is being spent on drought alleviation and by the end of the current financial year, the provincial government will have spent the money via the municipal infrastructure grant on water projects, and government will focus on tracking and reducing carbon emissions.

KZN Legislature opens in style

The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature opening last week welcomed traditional fashion to the event as members of the provincial Parliament made their way down the red carpet at the Royal Showgrounds. Members dressed in traditional fashion from all cultures that are celebrated in the province, both Eastern and African.

Private company to manage Harry Gwala Stadium

Msunduzi Municipality wants the Harry Gwala Stadium to be managed by a private company and that school sports events will be hosted at the Management plans of the stadium and athletic track include the appointment of staff to fulfil various obligations. The community services department will advertise for a suitable stadium management service provider to manage operations, events and general management of the facilities.
