Street Store

La Dame Royal with Pietermaritzburg Community and District Chest will be hosting the second Pietermaritzburg Street Store on 18 July, Mandela Day from 9am to 3pm at the Metropolitan Methodist Church at the corner of Peter Kerchoff and Langalibalele streets. The public is encouraged to drop off their old, but wearable and in good condition, clothing that can be used in the street store. All clothing will be distributed to the homeless in Pietermaritzburg who can visit the store and “shop” for clothing at no cost. To donate clothing, be a volunteer or for more information email minniezee12love@gmail.com

Open gardens for Mandela Day donations

On Saturday, 16 July SANBI’s KZN National Botanical Garden in Pietermaritzburg will have free entry for visitors on condition that visitors bring sanitary pads or toiletries and deposit it in the bins that will be provided at the garden entrance. The toiletry donations will be taken to a home or a disadvantaged school to celebrate Mandela Day. For more information contact Siphuxolo Ngqasa at 033 344 3585.

Multiple sclerosis meeting

The Multiple Sclerosis Society, KZN branch, is hosting an enlightening and informative MS function in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, 23 July at Victoria Country Club at 3pm. Topics to be discussed include the Human Cannabinoid system, the silent MS symptoms, MS through culture and race, how to handle depression, anxiety and mood swings and how to deal with people who think there is nothing wrong with you when you only have the silent symptoms. We also encourage family members and members of patients’ support groups to attend. Admission is free. For more information, contact Mala Naidoo at

Mind the gap

Pupils, students, teachers and parents are invited to Mind the Gap Conference on 14 July. Discussions will be held regarding the gap between secondary school and tertiary education.
