Hume Pictorials talk in Hayfields

WELL-KNOWN orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Rob Mclennan-Smith, will, once again, be presenting a highly interesting and informative talk, illustrated with rare philatelic material, on the Hume Pictorials at the Maritzburg Philatelic Society on Monday, 21 November at 3.30pm at St Mathews Parish Church Hall, 115 Hesketh Drive, Hayfields. As part of the Postal Reforms of the 1840’s, the Adhesive Stamp (the Penny Black) and the pre-paid Letter-sheet (The Mulready Envelope) were issued together on

06 May 1840. The stamp was extremely well received but the Mulready design was ridiculed by the public almost immediately. These designs poked fun at every aspect of Mulready, most are very amusing and often irreverent towards Britannia who was central in the design. The Caricatures are much sought after many collectors, many are unique and all command high prices. The McLennan-Smith Collection contains one of the largest numbers of these wonderful envelopes and they will be on display at the meeting. Members of the Public are invited to attend another interesting presentation, which is both informative, amusing and of considerable historic importance. Admission is free and tea will be available for a donation of R5.
