PIETERMARITZBURG’S family butchery, Mndeni Meats, was opened in 1986 by Nigel Kingham and Mark Bielovich at a small shop in lower Church Street.

Kingham, who got into the meat business as a buyer for an abattoir in Cato Ridge, got to know the butchers and after a few years decided to open his own business naming it Mndeni, which means “family” or “descendants” in Zulu. It wasn’t long before Mndeni Meats became a runaway success with customers queuing up to buy its quality meat.

Still, 25 years later, a similar scene can be found at Victoria Road and Housewives Market in Mkondeni, with customers jostling for their share of quality meat at affordable prices.

Keeping it a family business, Kingham’s daughters Cecilia Bestbier and Leeanne Kingham manage the Victoria Road store and the Market Road store respectively.

In 2015 Bluff Meat Supply undertook a massive rebranding of both the Victoria and Market Road stores. Along with the rebranding to Bluff Meat Supply outlets, both stores were upgraded in order to give customers an improved shopping experience.
